A year of Damian Highs!

As we come to the end of 2015 I want to reflect what this year has brought to us all

In January we saw Wolf Hall premier in the UK - I won't ever forget that it was my husbands birthday and we were at the theatre that night seeing Jersey boy (He's a fan bless him) and I remember looking at my watch thinking to myself how I wish I was at home watching Wolf Hall!!!!!  Wolf Hall was one of the highlights of the year.

In February Damian attended the Berlin Film Festival with the cast of Queen of the Desert, along with Nicole Kidman.

In March a friend and I had a fantastic night watching the ITV jonathan Ross show being filmed while Damian was one of the guests - it was so funny watching him being interviewd and when we watched the edited version I couldn't believe how much they took out! was so glad I got to see the original

In May my lovely friend Sabrina came over from Germany (damian-lewis.com) and we went to see American Buffalo at the theatre, it was so brilliant to see Damian Live and on the stage, I have seen him in so many TV films and shows but this was the first time I was able to see him live and it was fantastic!

In June Sabrina came back from Germany to watch American Buffalo one last time before it finished and we were invited to meet Damian in the Green Room after the show. It was just wonderful to meet him and chat to him for a while and wish him lots of luck with the Billions project

In September my best friend and I took the day off and went to the cinema to see Bill - yes we were the only people in the cinema and we had popcorn and sweets at 11am - but it was a great film and even though Damian, who played Sir Richard Hawkins, was in it for a short time at the start and end it was a great film.

Also in September Queen of the desert was released and Sabrina was able to go and see it in Germany! I am still patiently waiting!!!!!!!

In October Damian was a very special guest at the New York Festival, where he was interviewed by Lauren Collins.

December and only a few days ago we found out that Damian is up for a Golden Globe for his staring role in Wolf Hall as best supporting actor which will be announced on January 10th in LA.  We wish Damian lots of luck and congratulations on the nomination.

Its been one hell of a brilliant year and I cannot wait for 2016
Starting with January to see Billions
A new Series of Wolf Hall
The release of Our Kind of Traitor

Bring on 2016, we will be there all the way!!!!!!

Christmas Milo Bake Off

So as many of you know - I like to do a bit of baking! well I do a LOT of baking but unlike poor old Milo I am a bit better than he is - although The Baker as you know is one of my favourite films that Damian has stared in!  My baking business has been going now for over a year and I want to share with you all a fabulous recipe! for Christmas Reindeer cakes!!!

These Yummy cakes are perfect for a Christmas treat and even Milo could make them!

100g dark chocolate

125g butter, softened
3 eggs
1 and a half cups (225g) self-raising flour
1/2 cup (75g) plain flour
1/4 cup (30g) cocoa powder
36 large pretzels
18white chocolate buttons
18 red M&M’s
36 green M&M’s
Chocolate piping gel

Chocolate buttercream

125g Soft Butter
3 cups of Icing Sugar
1/3 Cups Coco Powder
2 Tablespoons Milk

Method
  • Preheat oven to 160C. Line eighteen 1/3 cup (80ml) muffin pans with paper cases.
  • Step 2
Combine the chocolate and water in a medium saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Set aside to cool completely.
  • Step 3
Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the combined flours, cocoa powder and chocolate mixture, in batches, and stir to combine. Divide evenly among the lined pans.
  • Step 4
Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centres comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Step 5
To make the buttercream, use an electric mixer to beat the butter until very pale. Gradually add the icing sugar, cocoa and milk, in batches, beating well between each batch.
  • Step 6
Spread icing evenly over each cupcake. Arrange the pretzel on each cupcake to create antlers. Place a white chocolate button on the opposite side to create a nose. Use the piping gel to attach the red M&M’s to create a red nose. Arrange green M&M’s for eye, and top with chocolate piping gel for pupils. Place on a serving platter to serve.

    Quiz Result

Well of course you all knew it was the amazing Band Of Brothers!
And Damian played the wonderful Dick Winters

A 2001 American war drama  The executive producers were  Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who had collaborated on the 1998 World War II film Saving Private Ryan.  The episodes first aired in 2001.  The series won not only Emmy but a Golden Globe too in 2001 for best miniseries.

The series dramatizes the history of the Easy Company part of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, from jump training in the United States through its participation in action in Europe, and up until Japan's capitulation and war's end. The events portrayed are based on Ambrose's research and recorded interviews with Easy Company veterans.   All of the characters portrayed are based on members of Easy Company. Some of the men were recorded in contemporary interviews, which viewers see as preludes to each episode. The men's identities are not revealed until the finale.

Aunty Sabrina Visits us - On Queen of The Desert

Finally it's good to live in Germany Werner Herzog’s epic Queen of the Desert released in early September and of course I went to see it. Herzog’s films are special artistic and most of them very colourful and Queen of the Desert is no exception. the true star of the story is the Desert the landscape is absolutely breathtaking and the scenery is so opulent and marvelous!

Nicole Kidman as Gertrude Bell is fascinating to watch and it's great to follow her leading character through the movie and Bell's travels some of them made under danger and extreme risks and yes you get an inside in the century and her thinking. Gertrude Bell wasn't able to live a fulfilled love life her great love Henry died early and later she met Charles Doughty-Whiley played by Damian Lewis the love story was difficult from top to bottom since Doughty-Whiley was a married man captured in his marriage and his responsibilities.

I remember I joked with several friends that his look remind me of Rhett Butler and even tweeted about lol but it was so much more! I told you last year how much I love to explore a new Damian character and I'm always impressed how different each character is from the other he even walks different that's funny but I love that special difference and I felt awkward telling you this last year but after watching Wolf Hall American Buffalo and now Queen of the Desert I couldn't be more right. Damian as Charles Doughty-Whiley is charming and adorable he's secure in his own skin but so in love with Gertrude and as we all know Damian Lewis is capable of transport so much by doing so little and he does it so well  you know the second he met Getrude Bell that he's fascinated by her, there's a beautiful scene where he "stole" a horse for her from the Turkish Government it's so charming and a real "Rhett Butler "scene:) Damian Lewis has a supporting role but the largest of the three men cast and it's sad to see how much he's torn between love and duty and you can only imagine how difficult it was for him to decide between heart and mind! Queen of Desert is a colourful epic with a great cast and an amazing landscape Damian Lewis gives a wonderful performance and I really recommend the movie... Sabrina

    Quiz Answer

The answer to Wednesdays quiz is

    Will- 2011

I love this film, my husband is a big Liverpool fan and I will never forget the Champions League final this year - he got stuck on the tube as they were winning and just missed them win!!! Poor thing but I do remember him being really happy!

This film centres on the trials and tribulations in the lives of two main fictional characters eleven-year-old Will Brennan and Bosnian footballer Alek and their trek to see Liverpool FC play in the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul

Brennan is Liverpool's number one fan, able to recite facts ad infinitum about the club and at a public school in the south of England since his father Gareth (Damian Lewis) is emotionally unable to care for him following the death of Will's mother. Gareth appears one day out of the blue with tickets for Liverpool's trip to the Champions League Final. Unknown to Will his father has health problems and suddenly dies and in his belief that the adults in his life are conspiring to quash his wish to get to the match to honour his father, two of his mates at school start Will on his way for reason of their own. His being missing becomes world-wide news and he encounters others that either support Liverpool or the game of football. One of these is Alek who stopped playing the sport following a tragic incident due to his own actions in his hometown during the Bosnian War
Alek is initially reluctant to get involved for various reason but a friend does his best to encourage Alek to recover from his personal demons by helping Will reach his destination. The two are off on the final leg of the journey stopping along the way in Alek's hometown where they elude police. Although they reach Istanbul they do not have tickets but in the quest to get them Liverpool stars Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher , recognise him who come to the rescue and makes possible for Will to realise his dream and much more than he could have imagined if his father's original plans had come to be.

    What if Charlie..........

One of my most favourite Characters that Damian has played is Charlie Crews in the great TV Show Life....  I discovered Life after I had watched homeland - Before Homeland I have to admit I didn't really know anything that Damian had been in - after Homeland I googled Damian just to see what else he had been in, and came across this LIFE - so I got my husband on the case to find it so we could  watch it as soon as Homeland season 2 had finished.  Taking in mind I was used to Nicholas Brody, a character who even at the end of season two we still were not sure where we were with him!! Did he didn't he? I had spent weeks getting to know this wonderful character who was scary, dangerous and also ever so sexy! and I had to get a new fix and boy did

Life - when we hear the word life what does it make us think? Life as we know it? a new life? or a Life sentence.... Life is about exactly that - Charlie Crews is sentenced to life in prison only to be found not guilty and be given his life back to live - But What if Charlie was not found guilty at all?  What if he had not been put in prison wrongly accused of murder and he just carried on as a LA cop?

Well for one he would not have been Detective Crews, and if he was it would have taken him a while to be made up to that level, he would not have split from his wife Jennifer, maybe he would even have a family of his own, he would still be a part bar owner with his friend who was murdered, and of course he would not have got to work with Dani Rees.  I loved the series life, I loved the character that Damian played, he was kind, caring and loyal I think everyone needs a Charlie Crews in their life!

below is a review from the Guardian

Although written in 1877, Ibsen's play has the shock of the new. That is partly because, aside from an RSC revival 28 years ago, it has had startlingly few recent productions. But it's also because Ibsen's assault on the capitalist ethic and the mendacity of power still seems as potent as ever.
Ibsen's hero, Karsten Bernick, is a thriving shipbuilder in a small Norwegian town. But his whole life and career is built on a network of lies. Fifteen years before the play's action, he allowed his wife's brother, Johan, to take the rap for a sexual and financial scandal.
He also jilted the formidable Lona Hassel to make a loveless marriage with her half-sister. When Johan and Lona return from America, he is threatened with the exposure of his life-lies; and even his plan to make a killing from a new railway is revealed to be based on corrupt insider dealing.
What Ibsen shows us is Bernick's eventual moral awakening; but he does so with his unique mix of irony and ingenuity. "Destroy me and you destroy the town's future," cries Bernick at one point, thus proving that civic patriotism is the last resort of the scoundrel.
But Ibsen shows the noose tightening round Bernick's neck with diabolical skill. At one point Ibsen's hero hopes to despatch his unwanted brother-in-law on a rotten vessel little realising that the floating coffin contains unforeseen human cargo.
But the virtue of Marianne Elliott's stupendous Lyttelton production, and of Samuel Adamson's new version, is that they add to the intensity of Ibsen's irony. As Bernick finally lines up alongside the other civic worthies, I was reminded of Festen in which unpalatable truths are only revealed under extreme pressure. Even Bernick's confession of his sins becomes a double-edged affair in which he ensures he retains effective control of the town's financial future. Elliott also grasps Ibsen's peculiar blend of naturalism and symbolism. Rae Smith's design begins with a realistic image of women busily sewing in a sunlit garden room. But, with each successive scene, the set is stripped bare in accordance with the gradual exposure of Bernick's conscience. By the end we are left with the spotlit image of Lona Hassel and the thunderous sound of a train symbolising the advance of industrial capitalism.
Damian Lewis captures perfectly Bernick's blend of bravado and cowardice: even the way he checks behind every door before confronting Johan reveals his essential furtiveness. Lesley Manville also plays Lona superbly as a mixture of feminist free spirit and Bernick's hidden conscience. And there is prime support from Brid Brennan as his self-sacrificing sister who gave up life for teaching, from Joseph Millson as the angry Johan and from Michael Thomas as a pontificating teacher. But the real joy lies in seeing a virtually unknown Ibsen work rescued from the shadows and shown to be a resonant play for today.

    Quiz Answer

And the Answer was - The Silent Storm (2014)

The Silent Strom follows an enigmatic outsider who lives on a remote scottish island, who finds herself caught between her minister husband played by Damian Lewis and the delinquent who is sent to live with them.

I was lucky enough to go and see the BFI premier of this film where Damian said a few words along with the rest of the cast, director and producer.  If you get a chance to see the film you will see how scary Damian's character Balor is but also see how stunning the scenery is on this island.

If Music Be the Food Of Love.......

Play on! or so the great Shakespeare once quoted.

Personally I love music, there is no particular band or musician, I like everything, I can listen to classical, rock, modern, jazz, R&B and music from the 70's and 80's, music from shows, soundtracks from shows! The list is endless.  I can be in the worst of moods have one of the most awful days ever but I get in my car, put on the iPod and sing along to something and instantly feel better, it doesn't solve problems or make bad things go away, but for a few minutes it takes your mind some place else.

Damian is a music lover as we heard on his Desert Island Disc interview, his choice of music was so different and also made him think back to certain times in his life - thats the great thing about music it can take you back to a time that you may have forgotton or a time you loved so much and want to remember.

When I used to hear Elvis on the radio or in a store I would always think of a guy in a white suit with glitter and bell bottom trousers singing tightly to a microphone and screaming women crowded round a stage!

Since being a Damian fan I hear Elvis and think of this!

Damian doing Karaoke at the iCap Charity Day in 2014.

I used to hear Gangham Style and think of my kids jumping and dancing around the lounge when it came on  - Since being a Damian fan I hear Gangham Style and think of this......

Damian Dancing to Gangham style on the Jonathan Ross Show in 2012

I Used to listen to Billy Idol white Wedding and think back to my youth and how much I loved that song and played it over and over again! if I hear it now! yep you guessed it I think of this!

Damian Lewis singing White Wedding at the Homeland Wrap Party.

Music seems to be a huge part of Damians life on and off set, in real life as well as TV and film.  We see in Chromaphobia him playing the piano and the electric guitar and singing too.

What can I say he is talented in so many ways, acting, signing, playing instruments, modelling and of course he's funny too.  I think this is why Damian is such an appealing person, he gives so much.......
