Will you let me go? - Soames, Irene & Bossiney (Forsyte Saga)

Soames...

Upper Class..the Column

When I started to interest myself for Great Britain it was quite clear I couldn’t avoid to get closer to a phenomenon called upper class.

These two words comes often with a report about Damian Lewis, if not directly than for sure wrapped in a sentence about the fact that Damian is an old Etonian for a German that sounds  posh and smells like the cliché of the stiff upper lip and to be honest with you I always found the whole topic a little bit scary because it transports a kind of guardedness and that is miles away from my own character so I was a bit afraid of seeing Damian Lewis for the first time truly hoping he wouldn’t be like Soames :)

Tea and a Mag: PBS Interview with Damian Lewis on Forsyte Saga

source: Damian-Lewis.com

PBS Masterpiece Theater has, for years, brought into American living rooms the greatest British TV productions. The Forsyte Saga is no exception. In fact, it stays among the most beloved installments on Masterpiece Theater and ranks only behind the landmark “Upstairs, Downstairs” in a 2007 fanpoll.

PBS had a phone interview with Damian Lewis back when they broadcasted The Forsyte Saga  on TV. In the interview, Damian Lewis gives us his perspective about Forsyte Saga as well as about his character, Soames Forsyte.

Soames a man of property

I keep saying that I actually dislike Soames Forsythe but haven t seen no other project of Damian Lewis more often than the Forsythe Saga so what is it that makes Soames such an attractive character?

Until today I keep also reading on Twitter and other social media platforms about Soames, people mostly women still talk about him.

Emma about Soames

So after falling in love with Damian Lewis as Brody in Homeland I then googled what else this amazingly talented actor has starred in. After watching life and loving Charlie Crews, I then found the wonderful Forstye Saga.  To be honest I have never been a great lover of the 'period drama.' Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs has never rocked me in any way so I was dubious about watching a 2 series, 10 episode long period drama, but because Damian Lewis was the starring role I felt I should give it a go.

She walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellow`d to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies

The Forsyte Saga... A Summary

The Forsyte Saga, first published under that name in 1922, is a series of three novels and two interludes published between 1906 and 1921 by Nobel Prize-winning English author John Galsworthy. They chronicle the vicissitudes of the leading members of a large commercial upper middle-class English family, similar to Galsworthy's own.[1] Only a few generations removed from their farmer ancestors, the family members are keenly aware of their status as "new money". The main character, Soames Forsyte, sees himself as a "man of property" by virtue of his ability to accumulate material possessions—but this does not succeed in bringing him pleasure.

About The Forsyte Saga

The Forsyte Saga is the story of a love polygon that shifts like a kaleidoscope. Soames loves Irene, Irene loves Bosinney, and later, young Jolyon. Young Jolyon's daughter June loves Bosinney, young Jolyon loves his daughter's nanny Helene, and later, Irene. Old Jolyon, improbably, is infatuated with Irene.

"... Highly watchable... there are lots of emotions heaving beneath those buttoned-up exteriors... It all adds up to really absorbing television."
