Family tips for London family week

Winter in London is a wonderful time!

From ice-skating to hot chocolate, you can indulge in some fantastic festive activities in the UK capital. And if the weather turns bad, London's indoor attractions are among the best in the world.
Little ones are particularly vulnerable to winter's icy winds. Keep them snug with warm coats, woolly scarves, hats and gloves. Check out our Shopping for Kids feature for ideas on where to kit them out. Your main problem will be getting them to take their new winter gear off!
The best way to beat the winter blues is to get outside and get the blood pumping. It's also a great way to burn up any surplus energy! London has hundreds of parks and outdoor spaces for you and the kids to explore. See our Open Spaces section to find a park near to you.
Get your skates on at Alexandra Palace's ice rink. It's a great way to get some exercise and tire out little legs. You could also try one of the temporary ice rinks which pop up all over London from November to January.
If the weather's too cold, London has plenty of indoor attractions suitable for children:
If it starts raining, why not hit one of London's cinemas and catch a film? If you want to really impress your brood, try one of the capital's IMAX cinemas. Kids can gawp at the enormous screens and be amazed by the perfect picture quality. It's guaranteed to keep them quiet for hours.
Boost energy levels and warm up with a steaming mug of delicious hot chocolate. Try Notting Hill chocolatiers, Melt for a serious dose of cocoa. They also run a children's hour where young chocoholics can have a crack at making their own chocolate treats. Yum!
London is a magical place to be at Christmas. See the big Christmas tree at Trafalgar Square, take the kids to visit Santa at one of his grottos (in department stores and at various London attractions); or enjoy a traditional pantomime.
